Austin is a great city. It's great for its live music, of course, but it's proving itself to be a great city in its response to tragedy. Memories of what should have been yet another year of inspired SXSW music and fun are now forever scarred by the drunk driving tragedy outside of The Mohawk on March 13.
Almost immediately in response, SXSWCares pulled together and has so far reportedly raised nearly $200,000 to aid victims of the tragedy and their families. And as no surprise, many of the fundraising efforts have come from Austin's live music community.
From April 12 - 20, a community-wide fundraiser, "SXSWCares Big Benefit," will host shows at various live music venues around Austin as well as a silent auction to help bring in donations to SXSWCares.
Room 24 is proud to be able to help in this response to the SXSW drunk driving tragedy. We'll be playing a set for one of the SXSWCares Big Benefit shows at Red 7, 611 E. 7th Street, on April 14. All money from ticket sales for the show will go to SXSWCares, so we're hoping lots of people will come out to hear us and the other great bands playing that night - Space Vampire, Residual Kid, Carl Sagan's Skate Shoes, Hired Goons, and The Stand Alones.
But we're committed to doing more - After the fundraiser at Red 7, we're playing another, albeit non-fundraiser, show still during the period that the SXSWCares Big Benefit fundraiser is going on, which we figured we'd turn into its own fundraiser to benefit SXSWCares. So...
Please help us help SXSWCares. Thanks.
